White Spots on Holly Bush Leaves

Question
QUESTION: As the "subject" says, white spots on holly bush leaves: these spots are on top and the under side of the leaf. The body is oval in shape with "fingers" radiating out on the entire circumference. The total size of a spot is less than 1 mm. They look like an insect, but could be a scale, I suppose. What are they and how to get rid of them?
Thanks, Murray

ANSWER: You are very observant.  They are scale insects.  Control is by using Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide that is a systemic that you mix and pour around the base of the plant.  The product is taken up and kills the feeding insects.  If you are in a cold climate you may wait for warmer weather to make sure the plant is actively growing so it will take the product up.  The label tells you how much to mix according to the size of the plant.  Good Luck.

QUESTION: I should have noted that I am in southeastern, coastal NC. A friend said that spraying the leaves with a diluted solution of dish detergent (e.g. Joy) would rid the leaves of this "thing". Will that also work?

Thanks, Murray

Answer
In theory yes.  The idea is to suffocate the insects.  A better solution to that idea is to use a horticultural oil such as dormant oil if you are sure the plant is dormant in growth.  It will serve as a better suffocating agent than soap.  Treat now and again about Feb 15-20.  The insecticide treatment is the best method however, because it is systemic and lasts for 6 months up to a year.  Let me know your preferences.
