plant question (ID)

Question

plant ID
My plant lost 2 leaves by accident (I knocked into it :(  ).

I don't know what its called but know its a pretty common houseplant. Do you know what this is and if I can propagate the leaves? Thank you for your help!!

Answer
Lori,

It appears to be a ficus elastica or variegated rubber tree but it is difficult to tell for sure because of the way the leaves are rolled up. It is not getting enough sun, being a variegated plant it needs moved over in front of that window so it getts more light. Also it appears that you are either over or under watering it. I cannot tell without feeling the soil. If the soil was dry when the picture was taken the plant desperatley needed watered. If it was wet you may be overwatering it and the roots could be rotting making it impossible for the plant to take up more water. When you water it you need to empty the drain tray an hour after watering it so it is never sitting in water. However it should not be allowed to dry out to the point that the leaves curl up like in this picture. It should be watered every 7 to 10 days at the most or whenever it feels light weight when picked up. Good luck.
