roses turning brown before blooming

Question
I live in Ca.  My roses buds either turn brown and die before blooming or soon
after blooming.  Aslo there are light green bugs on the buds.  How do I get big
beautiful roses?

Answer
Soundslike you are describing aphids.  In large numbers they can suck the juices from the buds and cause them not to open and even turn brown before blooming.  You can try two control measures.  There is a product called Safer's Insecticidal Soap sold at garden centers that comes in a spray bottle ready to use.  You will have to treat a couple of times in order to get rid of them.  The other control, and a better product, is called Bayer Advanced Rose Insecticide.  This product is mixed with water and poured around the base of the plant.  It is taken up systemically and will kill the bugs within a week or so.  It can be found at most big box stores in the garden section.  The product also provides up to a years worth of protection from reinfestation.  It can also be used on other landscape plants.  I hope this answers your questions. Good Luck.
