brown wilting buds

Question
Hi,

A 5 gal Sombrieul(do not know spelling) climber, newly planted, buds are tinged in brown and do not open. Suspect a combination of overwater and disease, help. Thanks, BMc

Answer
There are two reasons why rose buds don't open. One is that the buds were killed by a late frost when they were forming and the other is caused by an insect called a rose midge. This insect lays it's eggs at the base of the rose buds. Then when the eggs hatch in the late spring they damage the bud by eating them. A spray by any rose insecticide will solve this problem.
