roses not blooming

Question
My miniature roses (4 bushes) all have buds but the stem starts to turn brown before they ever bloom & the leaves are falling off. These were purchased from a grocery store florist

Answer
Hi Dianne,

Do your roses have a name printed on the tag?  If they do can you tell me what they are?   Are your roses still in the pot with plastic pot cover on it?

But for now, here is what is going on with your roses.  If they are still in the plastic pot cover that the stores usually wrap them in, the rose is staying too wet.  The brown on the stem is a result of the pot holding too much water.  The leaves falling off is another sign of the soil is too wet. I would let the rose/s dry out completely (remove pot cover) and then slowly water them in the sink to where the water can drain from the holes.

With it being winter, you may want to mist the roses once you have the soil dried out. They would prefer a sunny window.

Once winter is over, plant them outside.  They have been forced in a greenhouse and cannot take freezing temps.

Once I have the names, I will know how temperamental the roses are.  Sometimes you get a good rose that will grow outside and sometimes they root these certain roses for the holidays and they die.  I do not like this practice as it makes the person feel they have failed and scared to try roses when it was a decorative rose and not one meant to go into the garden.

Please let me know if I am on the correct path with your question.

Thanks,

Jay
