no flowers or buds?

Question
plant seems to growing fine but no flowers or buds. why?    ...roses...

Answer
Hi--most likely, they have grown some "blind" shoots--excess foliage that won't terminate in a bud.  Simply prune the larger canes back by about a third, making the cut 1/4 inch above an outward facing bud eye--a small triangular swelling on the cane from which a flowering shoot will grow.  If there is a lot of "twiggy" growth in the center of the bush, prune that out also.  This will allow more strength to go into the main canes, and allow for better air flow which will in turn help keep disease down.

A soil test is probably in order, especially for the pH level.  Roses like it between 6.3 and 6.8. You can get a decent meter for about $20 at Wal-Mart, or invest in the $100 model from Leonard's (find them online). In all likelihood, yours is a bit more acidic that the roses like.  This can be corrected with a cup of pulverized or pelletized lime scratched in gently around the "dripline" of the bush and watered in well.  The addition of extra phosphorous and potassium (or use the "super-bloom" formula of Schultz's or Miracle-Gro) will also help bring the buds to maturity.
