boring worms in large maple tree

Question
My Grandson who lives in Chester NH has several very large maple trees on his property.  One in particular is infected with some kind of a boring worm that has decimated a large portion of the tepee.  Several limbs are dead.  Large patches of the trunk are dead and one large trunk section of trunk up to a height of about twenty feet is infected. Dead bark peeled away easily shows small quarter inch round holes and a goodly amount of a sawdust like substance.  These holes are numerous and are not the results of wood peckers. Dried skeletal remains of grub like worms about an inch long are found in the decayed areas.  Is this something that can be treated to save this tree and prevent the spread of the disease to other large maples in the yard area of his home?

Answer
Not being an entomologist, I can not tell you what the insects are.  The only treatment that may be effective is Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide. This product is mixed with water and poured on the soil around the base of the tree.  It is taken up systemically and may kill the borers before they feed very much.  This product can be used on the unaffected trees to help protect them from insect infestation.  This is the best treatment on the market today.  Good Stuff.  If anything will do good, this one will.  Good Luck.
