Large Knot on Tree

Question
I have a very large knot on a tree on our creek property.  Some of the bark is loose, but most is solid.  Can I send you pictures so you can help me determine what I should do about it?

Answer
It would help to know what kind of tree it is.  If the knot is low on the tree, down close to the ground, I might think it could be Crown Gall, which is caused by a bacterium.  There is nothing that can be done with this situation.  The tree may live for years in that state.

The other case is just that the tree was injured some kind of way and the tree has formed callous tissue in an attempt to cover up the wounded area.  In either case, the tree will probably live for a long time with the knot on it.  There are times when you can take a chain saw and carefully cut the callous tissue off the trunk, but I would not do that unless I could see it.  I would not do anything right now.  Hope that helps some.
