I have a out doors plant that did good last year but this year we are losing several stems. They are just drying up. Any thoughts

Depends on your geographic location.  The plant could have suffered from cold injury last winter and is just no manifesting itself as branch death.  The plant could be getting too much water causing a root rot which would also cause the branch death.  Could you respond back with some more information about where you are and the environmental conditions that the plant is in.  This will help me make a better informed decision.  Thanks.
