hibiscus diseases

Question
QUESTION: i live in phx.  i have a hibiscus with a southern exposure.  it has done fine in the past. it is still putting out beautiful flowers.  however in the last month or so it's leaves are turning yellow and falling off.  it looks spindly.  long branches and few leaves.  what can i do to save this plant?

thank you,

susan bower

ANSWER: Is this plant in a pot and has it been moved recently?  I have several and when I pull them from my greenhouse in the spring and put in full sun the leaves always turn yellow and fall off.  If the branches are spindly, you can prune them back about 1/3 of their length.  The new growth will still produce flowers.  If this is not the case, please check for small oval shaped bumps on the branches, which would be an indication of scale insects, which could also cause yellow leaves.  Please respond with your observations.  Thanks.

QUESTION: this plant has been in the same place for over 3 years.  it has done well. as i said it stated the leaves are turning yellow and falling off.  no bumps on branches.  what else do you think might be happening?

thanks,

Answer
The plant may be just replacing old leaves with new ones.  If the plant has new growth coming on I wouldnt worry to much.  The other cause could be too much water.  Have you fertilized recently.  The plant may need some all purpose flower fertilizer.  Let me know your thoughts.
