sick aloe plant

Question
QUESTION: Hi Kathy I hope you can help me with this problem. I have a 12yr old aloe plant that I have been taking care of for my boyfriend while he is away. At first it was very happy & now the 2 main stems have just fallen out of their scaly stem. I'm not sure what that is called! I have not thrown them away but the bottom of the plant is mushy. I have put them in the dirt for now. Any suggestions.

ANSWER: Hi Cindy...stop watering you are drowning it.  It can almost survive with no water so give very little maybe some every two weeks or even less...

QUESTION: Thank you. So what should I do with the 2 main stems that have fallen? I have placed them gently in the pot just barely under the dirt.  Will they re-root??

Answer
Hi Cindy..  they have been out of the soil for awhile to harden off so place them in their  new pot,  water once,  then do not water till the soil is dry then repeat.  No fertilizer in the pot till the plant takes hold as we want to roots to develop. That should get them going for you, then same as the mama plant water about every two weeks.
