Aloe in distress

Question
Greg,

Sorry, that would be an important thing to know.  The plant is A. barbadensis the commonly called medicine plant.

Thank you,
Colleen

-----Question-----
I recently have rescued an incredible aloe plant in serious need of TLC.  In dumping out of it's pot to give it a good scrub and check for pests I have found it has had it's roots completely desimated by spider mites and root mealy.  The plant has been scrubbed, and treated for the pests and is now laying on the planting shed table waiting for some TLC.  The plant is 2 1/2 feet tall and equal in diameter.  I have removed all of the affected root and now am left with this incredible rootless plant.  How can I get it to develop new roots?  Although my home is a jungle I have never grown an Aloe before and am not sure what to do for it.
-----Answer-----
Dear Colleen,

I really need to know what type of Aloe it is. If you don't know, please send me a picture to [email protected] . Once I am sure what type it is, I can make some meaningful recommendations. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Greg

Answer
Dear Colleen,

You will want to bury as much of the stem as possible in the soil. Mix the soil with about 50% sand. Aloe barbadensis typically will grow along the ground when the stem gets long, putting down roots as it goes. If it does root, it will take a month or two, so be patient. Water only if the soil is dry. Hope this helps!
Sincerely,

Greg
