Question
hello, i bought an orchid a while back ago and it was doing just fine. i kept it the bathroom(separate from shower is) and the blinds partially open, on the east side of the house. i live in the east bay near the delta. Abruptly the blooms fell off and the middle of the stock or steam has turned brown, i don't want to cut it unless i have too. i really just don't want to kill the pretty lil thing.i just am not sure what to do.

Answer
Sommer, some phalaenopsis hybrids are genetically prone to have the old flower spike turn brown.  They can be cut off without any damage to the plant.  This has nothing to do with what you are, or are not, doing in caring for the plant. These plants like morning sun so you are fine there and bathrooms are usually the most humid place in the house, so that is good.

There are some crucial aspects that do need attention.  The main one is to repot the plant in fresh orchid potting mix.  This need to be done after each flowering to ensure healthy root and leaf growth.  When you locate a bag of orchid potting mix, soak a portion of it for a couple of hours while you are unpotting your plant.  Rinse off the roots of your plant and discard the old potting mix.  Some roots may be mushy.  If so, remove them as they are dead or dying.  I recommend repotting in a plastic pot with lots of drainage holes in the bottom.  The new orchid potting mix sahould be fir bark based which will allow lots of air movement to the roots and drains well when watered.  The new wet potting mix will help to prevent drawing water away from the orchid roots which can happen with dry mixes.  Water once per week and , with new growth, feed with 1/4 tsp of plant food per gallon of water in place of your regular watering.
