king palm

Question
we have a king palm that as soon as a frond develops it begins to die.I was baffled as our other kings seem okay.
Today i noticed the trunk looked funny and when i touched it the bark fell away exposing a pink powder.Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Hi Joel, The plant may have two problems.  One is a fungal disease that is affecting individual leaves on a frond.  I have seen this with the pink coloration.    The other possibility could be scale insects.  They will be oval in shape and can be scraped off with your fingernail. They may have a cottony covering that may have a pink color to it.  You will need a fungicide to hopefully stop this problem. I do not grow palms, so for more information check out diseases of sago palms on the web.  kathy
