Flowering Cherry Tree problem

Question
We live on the NE side of Houston, TX.  We have sandy soil that drains well.  Planted a flowering cherry bought at a nursery.  It is about 10 feet tall with a trunk about 3 inches in diameter.  Dug a hole about twice as large as the root ball, mixed in compost, watered in and the top of the root ball is about 4 inches higher than the yard.  It gets mid-morning to late afternoon sun.  It has been regularly watered due to a lack of rain until about 3 weeks ago when rain started.  The leaves are drooping considerably and it doesn't look healthy.  The temperature in the area until the weather changed has consistently been in the high 90's to low 100's.

Any suggestions?

Answer
Richard:
If this tree was recently planted as it sounds, it may be experiencing transplant shock.  I suggest literally "flooding" the hole out at the time of planting to get all of the air out of the hole, because if roots hit an air pocket, they may stop, so the idea is to get the roots in contact w/soil.  After the initial deep watering, then a good deep soaking 1 or 2X per week- generally for a few weeks.  Just let your garden hose trickle for a an hour or two. You might see if you can dig down about a foot and see how the soil looks in the root area.  This might give you an idea if it is getting too much or not enough.  Also take a look at the trunk and look for any type of physical damage to the bark.

Steve
