flowering cherry tree

Question
hi tom could you help my cherry tree had very little flowers this year also it has made no new leaf the small twig like branches are looking dead does this mean the whole tree is dead.

Answer
Hi Les,
Thanx for your question.  I'm really not a tree expert but we do have one here on Allexperts.  His name is Jim Hyland and he was with the U.S. Forestry Service.  He may be able to answer your question.  In order to access Jim go to Home/Garden, click on trees and then click on trees again.  Jim is currently on vacation until July 5, 2009.

Les, can you be a bit more specific about what is going on with the tree?  How old is the tree?  You say the tree did have a few flowers on it this year but there are no leaves at all?  Do the twigs snap off easily?  If there are no flowers or fruit on it now and no leaves the chances are pretty good that the tree is dead and it probably has some kind of internal or root rot caused by a fungus.  Have you contacted DEFRA?  Here's a link you may find helpful.

I hope this helps.
Tom
