Conifer Root Problem

Question
Sir,
I've got a 15ft Conifer in my front yard that is lifting up the cememt pathway due to root growth. My quetion is,would it be OK to remove the root by cutting(5" in Dia.)it from the tree without doing damage to the over health of the tree?
  Thanks
Paul.T

Answer
it depends on how far away the trunk of the tree is from the sidewalk. the farther away the better the tree will survive. go about 1-2' away from the sidewalk and dig a 6' long trench, 2-3' down, and 6-12" wide removing or cutting all roots in the trench. lay a piece of geotextile fabric(like typar) against the side of the trench from the bottom of the hole to just below the soil surface as long as the trench is. place the dirt back in the hole and pack it in. this will create a barrier to prevent roots from growing towards the sidewalk. visit a local garden center/nursery to question them on what geotextile fabric they sell that will work for your project.
good luck
rick
