Flowering crabapple tree

Question
I recently planted a flowering crabapple tree, and removed the suckers at ground level.  I trimmed the leaves off about 6 inches of the shoot and placed in a container with water and a  little sprinkle of bonemeal.  Will these suckers become trees?

Answer
Hi Christina,
Thanx for your question.  Unless there is a root system on the suckers, they will not survive.  If you are trying to grow the suckers, dig down around them until you reach the root from which they are growing.  There should be a developed root system there.  Separate the suckers at the point where it will have a root system and then grow on in the desired location.  I hope this helps.
Tom
