Arborvitae emerald greens with gaping holes

Question
We had 20 of the emerald greens planted in our front yard to create a barrier against the traffic noise 2 1/2 yrs ago. They took well and so far so good. However, we have been noticing that they are not full nor are they growing together as we had hoped for. They are full of gaping holes and look terrible. They are still green so that is good. What can we do to combat this? is it a disease or is it do to the past snowy weather? Also I wanted to make sure to tell you that we had started a lawn service about 9 mo. ago. But the holes and such are not just at the bottom of the trees the holes range from top to bottom. Anything you could help us with would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you....Debbie P.

Answer
Hi Debbie:

Can you send a photo showing a part of this line of arborvitae? Include a photo of maybe two trees of this line showing these gaping holes.  Review your image on your computer to be sure they are in focus before you hit the "send" button.

Regards
Steve
