Holes in the field

Question
WE have regular sized holes appeared in our field/garden.  They are about 2" in diameter and look like we stuck a brush stale down to form a hole.  They are very regular.  No soil on the top.  It looks like they are linked.  There are a very large number of these.  What might they be please.

Thank you.

Answer
Don't know where you live so that affects the possible culprit, But if I had to guess, I would think a ground squirrel, be it chipmunk, 13 lined ground squirrel etc.

I am concerned though that you wouldn't have seen these animals scurrying about (you didn't mention them) as they come out during the day.

If you have never seen these creatures, then I would suspect, voles.
