What is wrong with Holmstrup American Arborvitae

Question
I purchased 4 of these bushes in June 2007 and they did well for the first year.  Now, they have these seeds that have formed, but no insects on them or in the seeds.  The leaves are turning yellow and are starting to die. The tops are getting scraggly and droopy.  Someone from the nursery had no idea what was wrong with them, but they are slowly dying.  Please help!

Answer
Hi there. There are a number of possibilities that could be causing your problem. To much or not enough water.Care at the nursery before you bought them. Many times problems from previous years will show up in following years.
Also you could have Twig blight of juniper is a fungal disease
caused by either Phomopsis juniperovoraor or Kabatina juniperi. Both fungi cause die back and cankers, which result in a weakened and disfigured plant. If infection is very severe it can kill plants. Secondary pests can also move in after the plant is stressed and eventually kill it. The disease is present across the eastern
United States. It affects mainly junipers but may also be found on cedars, cypress, arborvitae, firs, larch and yews .
You can google both of these for more info.I think your problem is probably environmental as opposed to fungal. Hope this helps some,Bill
