Will sugar hurt St. Augustine Floratam?

Question
Hello,

I was browsing through the message board and seen where you use sugar to get rid of weeds and fertlize your grass. I live in Jacksonville, Florida and I have St. Augustine Floratam, will sugar hurt this grass. I have tried every know product that I can use on my grass to get rid of weeds and I am not having much luck. Also interested knowing about your organic plan.

Thank you for your time,
Brian

Answer
Hi Brian;
Sugar won't hurt anything you put it on.
It does nothing to kill the grass. It keeps alive the beneficial microbes that enrich your soil. Weeds will not thrive in rich soil. they like poor soil.
Fertilizers kill these microbes. If you use chemical fertilizer, put it down, put down the sugar, and water them in together.
Wheh your soil gets very rich, you won't need to fertilize.
I have not fertilized in over 6 years, and my St. augustine grass is thick, and dark green.
I use 1 pound sugar per 250 - 300 sq.ft.
I only put sugar on my lawn, and I put it down every spring and fall.
Be sure to water to a depth of at least 6 inches, to encourage a deep root system.
