dollar week control in St. Augustine Grass

Question
I read your answer regarding the use of sugar to control dollar weed.  I live in Houston and my question is will the sugar attract the fire ants and sugar ants?  This would be a nightmare.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Marie;
The sugar doesn't attract anything because you water it in.
If you are not on an organic program, and chemicals have been put on your yard in the past few months, you may need to flush them out with waterings first, as the chemicals in fertilizers etc , kill all the micro-organisms.
All the sugar does is nourish these beneficial microbes. The rich soil is what does away with the weeds.
If you have a problem with ants, especially fire ants, chop up some orange peels very small and scatter them over the any beds.
Orange oil is the most effective ingredient in fire ant repellants and killers.
The peels sift down into the grass  and compost and make nutrients. They do not get smelly.
Chopped lemon peel scattered in flower beds and potted plants will keep neighborhood kitties from using them for a litter box.
