St. Augustine grass

Question
We chose St. Augustine for our front lawn grass in SoCal 10 years ago. The lawn needs lots of water to keep it lush during the growth months.  During its dormant period, the grass looks dead and is unsightly. A friend suggested I fertilize it with ammonia-nitrate. The commercial fertilizers that have significant amounts of ammonia-nitrate also advise it's not for St. Augustine. Please give me your advice and guidance on how to best care for my lawn year round. Maybe St. Augustine shouldn't be planted in SoCal and I should replace it. Please advise.  Thank you.

Answer
Greg, I live in So. Cal also. I would use ( calcium nitrate ) in the spring to bring the grass out of dormant. Then during the summer months use a 16-6-8 Turf Supreme, its a Best product. Fert every month and your lawn will be beautiful. Check-out my web site at www.emeraldkikuyu.com
