new bermuda grass

Question
I got a new Bermuda grass sod lawn and I am in Greenville, SC.  I have heard:  fertilize, fertilize at half strength, do not fertilize.  Which is it and what about the weeds popping up?  Also, how often do I water it?
Thank you for your time,
Julie

Answer
You will be watering that sod so much over the next 8 weeks or so that any chemical fertilizer you put down will be washed away before it can do your lawn any good. Water the sod twice a day for the first 4 weeks, gradually scaling back to once a day for four more weeks. An organic fertilizer like "Milorganite" will do some real good; the only trouble is that it should have beed applied to the ground before the sod was laid. You can still do it but it will take longer to see the results.
