torpedo grass in new sod

Question
Boy, I hope you can help us. We live in Biloxi, MS and our yard
flooded with salt water during Katrina and then was covered in
debris. We hired a company to resod. They took out the old grass,
tilled and then put down bermuda. It looked good for exactly one
day. Then torpedo grass started sprouting everywhere. What can
we do? The soil is very sandy and poor quality. Will the sugar
remedy work with bermuda grass? There is an empty field behind
our house filled with the stuff. Thanks so very much.

Answer
Hi Shannon.
I had no idea what that was, so I searched until I got some pictures of it.
I read on one forum that " that is one bad weed. the old folks aroung here say the only way to get rid of torpedo grass is to move.
I am not sure if rich soil would take care of that.
One site said it was developed to keep soil in on canals.
If this grass was delibertately engineered, then it may prefer rich soil.
To me, the pictures looked a bit like rye grass, only taller.
I HATE rye grass!!!
All I can suggest it that you go organic. That will eliminate all the other weeds, and may just get rid of the torpedo grass too.
All the pictures I saw of it had seed heads.
Keep it ,mmowed often so it doesn't put out seeds
Agricultural cornmeal is a good natural weed and feed.
Find out if you can get agricultural cornmeal, and put down sugar too.
I have never applied the cornmeal, so I don't know that amounts to use.
Use sugar at the rate of 1 pound per 250 sq.ft. of lawn and garden.
Put the sugar on everything!! It nourishes the beneficial microbes that enrich the soil.
Good luck.
