Pruning old Spruce Trees

Question
We have row of spruce trees growing on an slope  Many of these trees have two major off shoot branches near the base ( that have thickness similar to the main trunk). If you look at the tops of the trees one tree looks like three.    My question is I want to thin out and "thin " these trees so they grow better, how do I do this?
We live in Ont. Canada

Answer
hello Lisa

I have been mulling over the word 'thinning' in your question.

If you mean to remove some of the trees then clearly this can be done at any time. However, if you mean to remove some of the branches this is best done in March but it can be done during almost any season - they are tough trees!

Good luck
