Spruce Trees - Insects

Question
I live in Maryland.  Something is eating the needles off the ends of my spruce trees.  What can I do to stop this?

Answer
Frank, it could be one of many insects. The most prevalent, however, include spruce miners and tree mites. Attached is a website that shows pictures of the different types of damage insects cause and the most likely culprit based on the damage.

You can use various chemical insecticides to control these pests including sevin. You can also use organic insecticides including pyrethrum and rotenone. The best control, however, is horticultural oil. This product not only kills the insects, but their eggs as well. You can find these and many other controls at www.gardensalive.com.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
