Any idea what this is?  Was labeled "California Poppy"...obviously isn't.  Looks like buds going to bloom....but not yet....this is it's second year, just greenery last year, no buds.  But survived a very dry, sub freezing winter and came back (Carson City, Nevada).

Sounds like it may be a biennial...The leaves look like those of a piggyback plant (Tolmiea Menziesii). But I do not believe this plant grows outside in your area as it is native to giant redwood tree areas...

Plants are classified according to their flower structure...
Send a picture of the plant when the flowers open and it will be easier to ID it...

For quicker results you could also take your pictures to a local garden center (not chain store) to see if they can ID it for you...The plants in your area (Nevada) especially native species are quite different than where I live...
