identification

Question
-------------------------
well lets try again. the plant does not appear to be from a bulb. besides normal roots it has air roots which come right out of the base. it is potted in a bark type potting media. it has leafs shaped more like long butter knives, longest around 18 inches. the flowers are fragrant but dont really remind me of anything. they are like really skinny stars doing jumping jacks with a wider pedal out of the center. they are a pale yellowish green and have brownish spots . hope i was more helpful this time.

Hi Scott,

A picture would definitely help in identifying your orchid as there are a number of orchids that fit your description.  Can you write back with more details about the orchid plant?  Details such as leaf shape and length, base growth has a bulb or no bulb, plant is in a pot with potting media or mounted on a wooden plank or maybe a wooden basket, etc.  Also, are the flowers fragrant and what do they smell like if they are?

I'm not sure if it is possible to send or attach a picture on this web site, I've never checked to see if it is possible and how it is done.

Sorry I couldn't be any help in identifying your orchid but if you could give me more information I may be able to guess what kind it is with a few more details of what the plant itself looks like.

Yes, the central Ca. valley area does get hotter in summer than San Jose.

Answer
Hi Scott,

I am afraid I still am not able to figure out what type of orchid you have with the additional information.  But here are some very general care guidelines you can try in keeping it alive.

Place it where it will receive bright indirect sunlight with even full morning sun exposure until mid morning.  Temperature range between 60 to 85 F with humidity above 50%.  Having some light air movement will help.  Water and feed it when the potting media becomes barely moist.

Sorry I couldn't be any help.  Good luck and good growing.

Jim
