Plant Identification??

Question
Identification?
Identification?
Hello Will,
I inherited this plant about 5 years ago from a former employee. the plant was very small at the time and was shrivled up. I brought in miracle grow and watered it frequently. It grew very fast. I had to repot it once (4 1/2 years ago) because it was top big for the the pot. It continues to grow and gets very top heavy. If I cut off a leaf and out it in water in about a week it will sprout roots. I am not familiar with house plants but I have had it at home with me for a 1 1/2 years and would like more information to what type of lighting and also how to maintain the health of my plant. I have him partially under a plant light.  I also would like to get a bigger pot for him but am scared I will kill it if I repot him. If you could help it would be greatly appreciated. i have become quite attached to my plant. Thank You!!

Answer
Hi Alana,

In the photo I can see only leaves and a small portion of stem. To make a proper identification I would have to see the entire plant including the stems as they emerge from the soil. However, I can say that your plant is a type of Aroid, possibly an Anthurium, Aglaonema, or Dieffenbachia.

Virtually all Aroids do best in bright, indirect sunlight. That would be on a north or east facing windowsill. They do need protection from more than a couple of hours of the sun's rays falling directly on the foliage. They will do moderately well under a fluorescent light that is kept on for at least 8 hours per day, but natural light is preferable.

You are correct, that moving yours to a larger pot will probably kill it. Unnecessary repotting is the most common cause of plant failure. From the photo it appears that you have propped up your plant with a stake and string. Moving it to a larger pot will not help that problem, but pruning will. Again, a more complete photo would help me advise you on pruning.

Likewise, when I see the size of the pot it is planted in, I can better advise you on watering.

I have written an article on repotting that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
