help to identify

Question
I have a very large thick stalked plant growing under the shade of a dog wood tree.  It grows out of a wood flower box located aside of my brick garage.  As I said the stalk is thick with reddish tones blended into the green stalk.  Large leaves, also produced tiny white flowers in almost like a bunch of grapes hanging, the flowers are now turning into some type of berry and color is a deep dark purple.  It grows every year despite the fact that when it dries up I do pull it out of the soil.  Can you identify, I also took a picture if that helps.

Hi Linda,

It sounds like a Pokeweed,(Phytolacca Americana) also called Poke Salad, because the leaves are edible when the plant is young and before the stem has turned red.  I'm attaching a couple of pictures so you can see if that's it.
It is a perennial (comes back every spring) with a big taproot which you will probably have to dig up if you want to get rid of it permanently. Otherwise, you could spray or paint it with glyphosate salt (Roundup, Kilzall, etc).  This type of herbicide doesn't move through the soil, so it won't hurt the Dogwood tree, and it breaks down into organic parts within a week.

Thanks,
Susan
