please help me identify a plant

Question

plant
My son picked a plant and planted it in a little pot at home i wanted to know what it was called so i can find out how to care for it properly.

It is really smelly too I wanted to know if there was a way to stop it smelling so bad.

Answer
Hi Toni,

Your son's new acquisition is either a Sedum or an Echeveria - it's hard to tell without seeing the stems. But, no matter as they have the same care requirements.

It will do best in very bright direct sun, so keep it on your sunniest windowsill.

It should be planted in a very small pot filled with a porous potting mix. Add lots of perlite to the potting mix that you use. The pot must have drainage holes in the bottom.

Allow the soil to dry out about halfway down into the pot before watering. This is a plant that can survive drought, but not soil that is constantly wet.

The smell is probably coming from the soil that you are using. Use a peat-based, soilless potting mix for best results. Never use garden soil. Allowing the soil to stay dry will also help prevent root rot and curb odors.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
