soil

Question
Hi I recently had my soil tested by the local state college. Everything was either optimum or over!!
My question is, what do you think of using just liquid seaweed and fish emulsion for the crops and planting clover between the rows?

Also, What do you suggest for late season weed control? I'm hoping the clover will help some, any other suggestions?

Answer
Liquid seaweed will provide needed trace elements, and fish emulsion will provide nitrogen in the spring when growth is needed for new plant leaves.

As for weed control, we like to grind up bales of alfalfa hay with a cold manure like sheep, goat or rabbit.  If those are not available, you can grind it up with composted cow or chicken manure.  It is also good just shredded by itself, because as it breaks down it adds nitrogen to the soil. You can also just break it apart and lay it between the rows.

But the best thing about an alfalfa mulch is that if you lay down about four inches in-between your rows, it will bring worms which will then fertilize your garden and help to make it sustainable.

We mulch twice a year.  In the spring we till it into the soil and re-mulch.  In the fall we till it into the soil again, and let it set for the winter. We don't have any weeds, conserve moisture, keep the plant roots cool, and thereby provide each plant with an ideal environment in which it can come to its maximum fruition.
