Soil fungus?

Question
QUESTION: I am having a problem with my tomato plants and what I believe to be a soil fungus. I also seem to have developed an allergy to either this fungus or the vegetation in general. My skin has become very sensitive and irritated when I go to harvest. I have also recognized a slight respiratory issue.  ???????????? Can I eliminate this, if it is a fungus, by solarizing the garden area? Is there a method to eliminate soil fungus thoroughly?

ANSWER: Hi Ron, Soil is full of fungus, the vast majority of which are beneficial and many are necessary for good plant health.  If you can describe the symptoms of your tomato plants, I can possibly identify the problem.  Yellow leaves?  Are yellow leaves on the top or bottom of the plant?  Black spots on the foliage? Again, on the top or bottom of the plant?  Is the fruit affected?  Describe the damage.
Tomato plants cause contact dermatitis in the majority of people, the severity varies from person to person, so wear gloves when you harvest your tomatoes.  If you are having respiratory issues, see a doctor to determine the cause.  You may be allergic to the garden, but you should know for sure.  Jim

QUESTION: Jim,

Sorry, I forgot to indicate that the problem seems to start at the bottom. I'm told that is from the soil splashing on the plant during rain, which we have had plenty of. I use grass clippings, but probably a little late.

Ron

Answer
Sounds like early blight to me.  Mancozeb is a fixed metal fungicide with an excellent label for vegetables.  You can't stop the rain but try not to splash when you water and don't walk through the garden when the foliage is wet with dew.  You will spread the disease with you clothes.  Jim
