funeral spray

Question
could you tell me how to make a funeral spray? I make headstone saddles, and want to try a spray. I need to know what supplies I need, and how to put one together.
                  Thanks, Marolyn

Answer
Is this a hanging spray, or a casket spray?

For a hanging spray, you'd need to buy a special type of holder.  It looks like a plastic cage and comes with a brick of floral foam inside.  One end has a tab to hang on a hook on the easle.  You may wish feed a cable tie through the hole in the tab and hang it by the cable tie, instead.  That may be easier.

You soak the entire piece in water, and then add flowers.  The water in the floral foam should be adequate to keep the flowers fresh through the funeral, but I would mist the whole arrangement with a spray bottle of water until it's ready to use, since flowers lose moisture through their petals.

Just as a tip - if possible, make the arrangement while it's hanging.  It's very difficult to make it while it's flat, because once it hangs, bald spots often show that you couldn't see while the arrangement was lying down.

For a casket spray, there's a special saddle-shaped container you would need to use.  It has rubber feet you stick on each corner to prevent the container from slipping.  I usually use a full block of floral foam in the container, with floral tape criss-crossed from corner to corner.

You should use some trailing greenery to cover the container, and insert some flowers with the stems at an upward angle.

Keep water in the container until the spray is ready to be used, but make sure to pour all the water out before transporting it to the service.  If water is left in the container, it's going to be a guaranteed mess when the funeral director places the spray on the casket.
