SOIL HEMLOCKS

Question
Dr. Marston

Hi, I have a number of hemlocks and they are not as bushy or strong as I would like them to be. Some are not doing very well.  I have very acid soil, is there an exact
PH level for Hemlocks. What is the simplist way to nutralize the acid, and when should I do it.

What ever you can tell to get my tress to grow better
would be appreciated.

Thank you

Ken

Answer
Hi Ken,

Hemlocks prefer a soil pH of about 6.0 - 7.0
If you want to raise the soil pH simply add lime.  This is best done in the spring after the winter rains have passed.
Generally clay soils will require more lime than sandy soils
to change pH values.

General points to get the hemlocks growing:-

Apply an organic mulch to the base of plants in spring.
Keep plants well watered through the summer.
Feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser every fortnight during the main growing season.

Hope this helps.

Rgds,

Dr Marston.
