Top soil

Question
We are planning for landscaping in new house. Couple of our friends in neighbor have not used Top soil but the grass looks good.Do we need to have Top soil.
House is in : North East Ohio, Twinsburg.

Answer
Hi Uday, for turf areas, probably not.  It should be loosened (tilled) and raked flat prior to seeding or sodding, but if surrounding properties are growing grass well, then don't fix it if it's not broke.  For flower beds, I'd incorporate some coarse organic matter.  Fine pine bark, cotton burr compost or check with your local garden center for something that is available locally. Add an inch or so to your existing soil and then till it in to a depth of 6-8".   Jim
