Potting Soil for Madagascar Palm

Question
Can you please tell me if I should use regular potting soil when transplanting a Madagascar Palm, or should I use soil appropriate for cacti?

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Susan, If the plant has been doing well, then try to match the soil it's already planted in.  If it's bark based, look for a bark based soil. If it's peat moss and perlite, then match that. Multiple soil texture changes are what we try to avoid in a container because the two soil types dry at different rates causing a watering nightmare and usually root rot or an unhealthy plant. When in doubt, go for a more well drained soil.  You can always water more, but soggy soil will be a problem.
One more thing, don't repot unless you need to.  If you can push your finger into the soil knuckle deep, it doesn't need to be repotted.  Jim
