araucaria

Question

Araucaria tree
I have one specie of ARAUCARIA in a pot for 6 years, suddenly the tips are brown, loosing slowly its branches. Can I repot it? when? how do I care for it? will I have to donate it, to save it?
thank you.

Answer
Hi Carmen, You can repot it now.  Your new container should be no more than 2" wider than the one you have.  Try to match the soil type to what you have.  If it's in a bark based soil, then use a bark based soil.  Loosen a few of the outer roots, but try not to disturb the rootball too much.  Also, check them for spider mites. Take a piece of typing paper, put it under a branch tip and slap the foliage. Spider mites are about 1/4 the size of the period at the end of this sentence.  You'll look for movement among the specks. They can cause brown tips.  Use an insecticide for mites if you see any.
Eventually it will outgrow your place.  Until then, keep it until it touches the ceiling.  Jim
