planting apple tree from seed

Question
Hello, I have a question about an apple seed that my son planted six months ago.  See his god mother had given him a book called The Giving Tree.  It is about an Apple tree that cared for a little boy.  Anyway, Six months ago he ate an apple and plated the seed.  At this same time his god mother went into the hospital with a brain tumor.  She did not make it out.  When we settled at home I asked him what it was because by the time I saw it, it had sprouted.  He said it was and apple seed that he had plated.
We found it ood that at the time of her death this seed sprouted.
O.K. Now that the long story is over, the tree is about 12 in high in our garden withdow in washington state.  We live near seattle.  The question is, can I plant this VERY IMPORTANT tree outside now that it is July and will it live.
This tree is very important to him and I would hate for it to have the some fate as his god mother.
Please Help
Thank you
Chuck Manning
Tacoma WA
P.S. The seedling looks as if it has some kind of white mold or dicoloration on the leaves.   I don't know how much time I have!

Answer
Hey Chuck,
Thanx for your question.  I have visited the Seattle area and I really enjoyed my time there.

If the seedling is 12 inches tall, it is ready to be planted outdoors.  First thing though, if this seedling has been grown indoors, it needs to be acclimated outdoors.  We call this hardening off.  So, put the seedling in its pot in an area outside that does not get direct sunlight, extremes in heat or cold, wind, hail and leave it there for 7 days.  After that, I think this young tree wants to be in direct sunlight in your appointed place in the garden.  In regard to the white mold, I don't remember what this is called and yes, it can become dangerous.  I would remove the infected leaves.  If all of the leaves are infected chances are, being outside will kill most of it.  Please let me know what happens.  I hope this helps.
Tom
