Growing Daylollies from Seed

Question
Hey Tom,
I would like to start some day lillies from seed. Any tips on harvesting & planting would be appreciated.   Thanks, Mike

Answer
Hey Mike,
Thanx for your question.  Daylily seeds will be found in the round pods on the plant after the bloom has dropped and only the bulbous ovary remains.  Wait for it to turn brown and to begin to split open.  Once it starts to split, it's ready to harvest.  You whould find shiny, black, half-moon seeds inside.  A cold period of 60 days helps speed up germination.  After Christmas, plant the seed in a pot with moist, not soggy potting soil and make sure the seed is covered with soil not more than 1/2 in deep.  Seal the pot inside a plastic baggie and place in the fridge (not the freezer)for 60 days.  Return the pot to room temperature (around 70 degrees F) after that.  Sprouting will occur in a few weeks and tends to be sporadic.  Once sprouting has started, place the pot 8 inches beneath a 40-watt flourescent, shop light.  Once plants have several leaves (they look like grass seedlings only a little thicker) you can gently prick them out and plant in separate cells.  After the last frost, place the seedlings outdoors in a place that is protected from direct sunlight and extremes in temperature, wind, rain and hail for about 10 days.  After that, you can transplant them into the desired garden bed.  Blooming usually occurs the second year.  Bear in mind that the seedlings will probably not result in the same type of flower if the original plant was a hybrid.  I hope this helps.
Tom
