Clematis Progation

Question
I have a beautiful dark purple Clematis, I am moving and would like to have a start from the plant for my new home, how would I go about doing this?? Thank you for your time  Patricia

Answer
Hi Patricia,
Thanx for your question.  Take 6-8 inch long cuttings from the green portion of the vine.  Strip off all but the last 2 or 3 leaves.  Dip the cut end of the cutting into some rooting hormone such as Rootone and stick the cuttings 1 inch deep in moist, warm sand.  Keep the sand moist and warm and spritz the cuttings twice a day.  Rooting should occur in about 8 weeks.  Check for roots by gently probing around the cutting with a pencil.  Make sure there are lots of good roots before you transplant the cuttings.  The rooted cuttings will need to be acclimated to the outdoors before planting in full sun.   Place the potted cuttings in the shade and protect them from rain, wind, hail, etc. for 10 days.  I hope this helps.
Tom
