Clematis Bush

Question
We planted a clematis bush this spring, and it has done very well and bloomed late summer, and has even spread.  My question is do I just mulch it or prune it back, or wait until spring and prune it then.  Or just leave it alone and watch it grow.  we live in Trenton Ontario Canada Zone 5B.  Thanking you in advance yours in gardening, Jack & Pat.

Answer
Hi Jack,
Thanx for your question.  Prune it back some if it is looking messy or to get rid of dead growth.  I wouldn't prune it too much but now would be the time.  A light mulch of cedar bark or leaf mold about 4 inches thick out atleast 1 foot from the root ball will be fine especially if the plant is located where it is not protected from the North wind.  I hope this helps.
Tom
