Tree suckers

Question
Hi Jim,
I have been having problems with young Box Elder tree suckers...they grow up about 10 to 20 feet in one season, I cut them down to the ground and they just come back. Is there somthing I can hammer into the stump to kill them?
                       Thanks, bruce

Answer
IF you are asking about sprouts from a stump that you cut and do not wnat the tree then you can spray the sprouts with a Herbicide called Roundup. This will kill the sprouts and the root system. BUT if you want the tree and the sprouts are coming from it the only safe way is pruning them off. Roundup will kill anything green so make sure you do not spray when the wind is blowing and keep it off of plants not wanting to be killed.
