angel trumpet seeds

Question
I have some angel trumpet seeds and don't know how or when to plant them. Please help! I live in south central Mississippi. Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Katie,
Thanx for your question.  By angel trumpet I'm going to assume that we're talking about Datura which is also known as jimsonweed, thornapple, a night blooming member of the nightshade family and often grows wild in much of the U.S. particularly in the Southern half of the U.S.  It is a perennial but grows as an annual where there are hard frosts, by reseeding itself readily.  The seed has requirement similar to tomato.  Barely cover the seed, keep watered but the soil medium should drain freely.  Keep warm.  Germination takes about 3 weeks.  Prick seedlings out after they have their first set of true leaves.  The first set of leaves are just seed leaves.  They will need to be hardened off outdoors after the last frost.  Place them in the shade for about 10 days and then place in direct sunlight.  You get enough rain in Mississippi there shouldn't be a huge water requirement.  They will love the summer heat and humidity. I used to live in Northwest Florida and I know Mississippi well.  In South Central Mississippi this plant will probably behave like a perennial, dying back in the winter and coming back from the same root in the spring.  It could get huge.  Remember that all parts of the plant are poisonous so I don't recommend them around small children who haven't learned yet that they can't put everything they see into their little mouths.  Otherwise, the plant is a beautiful plant but it can turn into an invasive pest if you allow it to reseed itself.  I'm up here in Kansas and it readily reseeds itself here even after overwintering.  I hope this helps.
Tom
