purple angel trumpets

Question
QUESTION: I bought a purple people eater angel trumpet and every time a bloom falls off a seed pod forms to the size of a golf ball. will this fall off automatically or should I cut it off, and can I use this to plant more.

ANSWER: Hi Ester,
Thanx for your question.  Eventually, the seed pod will ripen and burst open.  The seeds are about twice the size of tomato seeds and look a little bit like them (they are all in the same family).  Remember that all parts of this plant are poisonous.  Keep away from small children and nosey pets.  The seeds germinate readily at 75F after about 20 days.  Start them like you would tomato or pepper seeds.  If your plant is a hybrid which I believe it is, these seeds will not produce plants that resemble the parent because hybrid seeds generally do not breed true due to the generations of inbreeding.  It's still fun to try and see what you get.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: How do I propagate it?

Answer
Hi Ester,
Thanx for your question.  You can clone it so you get an exact type.  They're pretty easy like you would tomatoes.  Just take a cutting about 6 inches long and you can stick it in some moist soil or in a glass of water.  They root rather quickly, just don't let the soil dry out or the water get cloudy in the glass.  Once they have enough roots like in the glass, go ahead and plant them in a separate pot.  In soil, they will start growing new leaves and get bigger once the roots start growing.

If you want to use the seeds which will most likely result in an inferior plant that does not resemble the parent, plant the seeds barely covered in moist potting soil.  They emerge in about 3 weeks.  Raise like you would tomatos or peppers.  They must be kept warm and not exposed to cold.  They also need lots of light.  I hope this helps.
Tom
