Annuals - Question

Question
Hi  My mother-in-law just left me with a plant to nurse while she is on a extended trip.  It is called Torenia hybrid (Summer Wave Blue).  One prong was slightly wilted when she gave it to me and now it is completed wilted with the other three sides looking great.  It was a little dry when she brought it over.  I'm not sure what to do.  I am keeping it just slightly moist and in the shade.  I did however notice a split in the prong that is wilted.  That particular prong seems to be dying.  Should I just clip it off.  Please help!

Thanks,

Maxine

Answer
Maxine,
The good news is that if you clip this wilted branch off, it will have no effect on the rest of the plant. The wilted prong probably got bent or broken in transit, and isn't of too much concern.  You're doing well by keeping it in shade, although if it could be in a spot where it gets two or three hours of morning or late-afternoon sun, that would be even better.  The other branches (prongs) that are coming out of the main part of the plant can be clipped about an inch or two from the ends - this will make the plant produce more of these stems, and more flowers.  Fertilize with a liquid fertilizer once every three weeks after you water the plant (never fertilize a thirsty plant) with the liquid of your choice: Proven Winners, Peters, Schultz or Miracle Grow.

I hope this helps,
C.L.
