bald cypress trees

Question
Dear Tom,

I soaked the acorns from a bald cypress tree in water last winter when they dropped on the ground.  I put them in potting soil in the garage after a few weeks. This spring I put them outside in a the same pot.  I just noticed I have 12-15 sprouts coming up about 10-12 inches tall.  Now what should I do?  Should I put them in the garage for the winter when the weather gets cold, move them, plant them in the ground!!!!!!!

Answer
Hi Sandy,
Separate the sprouts carefully and put them in separate pots.  Keep them watered and feed them with half strength balanced fertilizer -12-12-12.  If you have really cold winters place the dormant seedlings in a cold garage or shed and water once a week, otherwise, they should be able to overwinters outdoors protected from the cold north wind.  You can plant them in the ground now, if you know where you want to plant them.  Give them a good mulch of straw in the late fall to help protect young roots.  I hope this helps.
Tom
