trees

Question
I have several trees on my property and I do not know how to identify them. I think they are firs. They are turning brown from the bottom and up towards the outer branches. Can you tell me of any literature about these trees and how to identify them. Thank you.

Answer
Pete,
If your state has a co-operative extension service, then you can take a sample to them, or take a sample branch to your local garden center- they should be able to help.
The best way to tell the difference between a Spruce anda Fir is by the needles. Spruce tree needles are square, while Fir needles are flat.
As far as the browning, evergreens normally shed their inner needles, what would be the third and sometimes second year growth. This helps to strengthen them as the new growth takes over as the primary food producers.
I hope this helps.
